Covid-19: What is happening across Canada and around the world on Monday?

Concerns remain as the Omicron strain spreads across Canada and around the world. 

As the omicron variant of the coronavirus spreads, cases of COVID-19 continue to rise across Canada. 

With people, Ontario reported more than 9,800 new cases on Sunday, Quebec brought nearly 8,000 and Nova Scotia confirmed more than 1,100 over the weekend.

Many cases have occurred since the new restrictions were implemented in Quebec, limiting private gatherings to six people or two domestic bubbles. 

Meanwhile, public health experts expect the number of cases to continue to rise given the high transmission of the Omicron mutation, raising concerns about Canadian hospitals and healthcare professionals’ ability to cope with the new wave of the pandemic. 

As of early Monday morning, more than 279.9 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported worldwide, according to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus tracker. 

The total number of deaths is said to be over 5.4 million. In the Asia Pacific region, the number of regional COVID19 symptom cases in China has risen again and most new infections have been reported as the city of Xi’an enters its fifth day of the quarantine, while Australian authorities have not imposed new restrictions despite the first domestic death by Omicron.

Meanwhile, South Korea announced that it has announced the emergency approval of Pfizer’s pill, Paxlovid, for the treatment of COVID-19. 

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) said that the introduction of Paxlovid, it is expected to diversify the treatment options for COVID-19 and prevent the patient from worsening amid a sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 infections and severe cases in Korea. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the government had entered into a contract to purchase Paxlovid tablets in sufficient quantities to treat 362,000 patients. Paxlovid tablets will be shipped to Korea in mid-January.
