Here’s how a small Asian shop in Labrador West filled a gap

Nfld and Labrador

Key takeaways:

  • Red hot dogs, ramen, pompano fish, make-your-own bubble tea, and more are sold at the shop.
  • Marie Torres and Roy San Buenaventura sell everything from make-your-own bubble tea packets to ramen at their shop Taste of Asia.

A small Asian grocery shop in Lab West noticed a gap in the community and began to fill it from their home, then grew into a small store.

Now they’re preparing to grow again after their Asian products— including red hotdogs, ramen, fish, tea, and bubble tea — have been flying off the shelves.

Taste of Asia opened in September 2020 on the first base of the Gallery 201 building in Labrador City.

Marie Torres and her spouse, Roy San Buenaventura, both initially from the Philippines, sell everything from make-your-own bubble tea packets to ramen to Canadians and immigrants also and have products from Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Philippines, India, and more.

“I see joyful faces that ultimately we have a story like this here in Labrador West,” Torres stated. “They’re pleased, and they’re like, ‘Can you have this in stock as well?'” The concept for the shop began small, with the owners requesting items online and selling them to friends out of their homes. Over dinner, the pair chose to open a store.

But the couple were reluctant as they didn’t know if there was a market in Lab West, Torres said.
