A regional fire team is on the scene of a small but fierce forest fire in Carbonear.
Jeff Motty, a local forest fire duty officer, told CBC News soon after 7 p.m. that the fire was first reported late Tuesday afternoon.
The fire is burning behind companies on the corner of Columbus Drive and Fox Farm Road in the district.

Motty tells those businesses — a Canadian Tire and a Dairy Queen — aren’t a primary concern, but there are some houses in the area.
“There are houses in the space that we’re attempting to save. We’re doing some structure protection; we’re laying down some bars of foam there to help rescue the forest and guard the houses as well,” he said.
“We really just want to hit that down and put it out as best as possible. We’ve got sufficient fires on the go on the island right now; we just want to do our best to put that one to bed as fast as possible.”
