Paul Pope, a well-known producer and guiding force in the Newfoundland and Labrador movie industry, has died after almost 40 years.
Pope, who worked on many movies and plays, owned Pope Productions, the firm behind shows like Hudson & Rex, Grown Up Movie Star, Rare Birds, and Life with Derek.
Pope’s Facebook page published he died peacefully on Thursday morning, encircled by family.
“His service and devotion will be missed,” said the post.

He was an advocate for independent Canadian media. He acted as a founding member of the Newfoundland Filmmakers Cooperative, a board member of the Canadian Media Producers Association, and vice-chair of the Canadian Media Fund.
Pope got multiple prizes, including the Arts Achievement Award from ArtsNL, the 2020 St. John’s Tourism Award, and an honorary doctorate from Memorial University.
“It is with deep sorrow that St. John’s City Council knew of the sudden demise of Paul Pope, a vibrant force in Newfoundland’s film and film industry,” read a message from the City of St. John’s on Thursday. “Paul’s impact on the national entertainment community is immeasurable.”
As Pope’s demise broke on Thursday, prominent Newfoundland and Labrador movie industry members expressed their consolations and shared memories on social media.
